Just a Foodie In KC

Life is too short to eat bad food!

I have a hard and fast rule about never going to restaurants on opening night. To be honest I usually end up waiting a few months for all the kinks to be worked out. However, every once in a while rules are made to be broken. I had been waiting patiently for about a year for The Fish Market to open, so how could I resist not heading straight there on opening night to show my support.

A tight-knit family from Liberty, MO has taken on this endeavor, and the family while calling Liberty home has a deep love and family ties to the Louisiana area…oh yeah and a love for Po’boys. So the hot selling item of The Fish Market is just that..the po’boy. If you have never had the pleasure of going to foodie heaven a.k.a. New Orleans…a po’boy is their version of a submarine sandwich. There are lots of variations of it but at the roots that is what it is.

This place is off the beaten path on Old 210 Highway in Liberty and is just my kind of place. I will be honest up until this trip I had never been to “old” 210 Hwy even after having worked off “new” 210 Hwy. When you see a shark out in front of a building you know you are the right place.

The building itself MANY years ago actually used to be a fish market and they have some great nostalgic photos of the past. My friend Brandon had sent me a pic of the shrimp po’boy prior to opening so I knew what we were heading in for.

Now we come to another rule I broke…I rarely if evern order fried food and if I do it is not fried shrimp because 95% of the time it is pre breaded, over cooked chewy pieces of things without flavor. I ordered the shrimp basket and my other half ordered the shrimp po’boy. This shrimp was in a word SPECTACULAR! Hand breaded in a cornmeal based breading…these tasted so fresh it truly blew me away. The Po’Boys are all served with a side of Zapp’s Chips of course! The first thing we said when we got in the car after dinner was “wow that shrimp was good”. They have some other Po’boys on the menu and a few salads but I have to tell you it will be a hard sell for me to order anything else. If you are wondering if I really liked it I can tell you this….I am pretty sure we are going back next Friday.

Pigwich….OH MY! April 6, 2013

I must start this off by saying I am an Alex Pope fan. He is the Chef who owns Local Pig, the charcuterie I wrote about earlier. I am a fan of Alex Pope because I think he is a really inventive Chef, and I think the Local Pig idea was a genius idea for the KC Market. The last time I ate Chef Pope’s food, my foodie friend and I bought tickets (that were not cheap eats by any stretch) to eat in a barn up at Green Dirt Farms. From that dinner I decided that I like air conditioning, and my friend decided she did not like head cheese. Now with the success of Local Pig, Chef Pope has opened a stationary food truck with a limited menu adjacent to the butcher shop.

So off we went to sample Pigwich and my friend (the one that hates head cheese) met us there. Tonight I had a sandwich that blew me away, and currently will take the top spot off all sandwiches in KC. The smoked bologna at Remedy must step down and make way for THE CHEESESTEAK! Now this is not a traditional style philly…if you want that, go to Grinders they do a bang up job. This is a pumped up cheesesteak and it is messy and good..no it is great! You have to order it like it is. I ordered mine without peppers however I was told it came with peppers and onions and I am glad it did. They were carmelized and mixed in with the cheese and the meat..honestly it leaves me without words it was that good. All the sandwiches are served with homemade chips and they are a perfect side. I have to say it again….WOW!

My other half of course continued his burger quest and enjoyed a double cheeseburger topped with arugula and pickled onions.

My Foodie Friend tried the Bahn Mi which gets her that much closer to a culinary adventure in Vietnam she wants to take.

They also have a special sandwich that changes every day so I will have to go back and try the Rueban. I know Chef Pope makes his own sauerkraut so I can’t wait to try it. All the sandwiches come with chips and drink for $8.00. Take cash because Pigwich does not accept plastic….however when you are done eating you can take your plastic inside. Tonight I came out with bone in chops, chicken pot pie and some sausage to stock my freezer with. Pigwich and Local Pig both have Facebook pages if you want to check them out as well

P.S. I don’t like head cheese either
